A Tasty Sweet Treat - Puran Poli

People with sweet tooth do not wait for any occasion to indulge in sweets. Puran Poli is one such sweet which I often make in excess and store in refrigerator to sink my teeth in whenever I crave for sweets.
Again there are many ways to make these Indian delicacies, some use sugar as a filling while others make jaggary Puran polis. If coconut is the main stuffing down South of India, Channa Dal or Bengal gram dal are boiled to make tasty Puran polis in Northen parts. To each his taste.

Ingredients;
 (makes 10-12 Puran polis)

For the outer covering
1 and a half cups of Maida
2 tsp of Oil
A pinch of Turmeric powder
1/4 cup of water

For the Filling
1 cup Bengal gram or Channa dal
1/2 cup grated coconut
1 cup jaggary
A few Cashewnuts
A pinch of salt
1 tsp of Cardamom powder
Ghee or Clarified butter as desired

Method:
For the outer covering:
Take a big vessel and mix maida, turmeric powder, salt and 2 teaspoons of oil. Knead it into a smooth dough and keep it aside for an hour.

For the Filling:
Wash the bengalgram and boil it with very little water. Drain the water. Heat a skillet and add the boiled dal, cardamom powder and the grated coconut in it, fry till the mixture is dry.
Grind the above mixture coarsely in a grinder. Dry fry this mix again to remove any traces of water in it.
Cool the mixture of bengalgram filling.
Take a big marble size dough and flatten it using a rolling pin. Fill about 3 teaspoons of the above fillig in it. Fold all the sides of the dough and make a round ball of it.
Roll the filled dough using dry maida & rolling pin and make a thin chapatti.
Heat a non stick pan and cook this chapatti using ghee on both the sides till it is golden brown in color.

Serve hot with an extra dollop of ghee.
Slurrrp...!!

Try this Wholewheat Halwa  for a healthy treat.
